Oiling is one of the oldest beauty rituals in South Asia. Many of us grew up with a parent or grandparent massaging oil into our hair before wash day, convinced it was the secret to everything. Oil 1 is the first cosmetic oil in the ShinexEssentials range, and while we finalise its label, this page looks at what cosmetic oils really do and how to use one well.
Hair, body, or both?
Cosmetic oils are used in several ways, and Oil 1's intended use will be confirmed on its label:
| Use | What people typically do |
|---|---|
| Pre-wash hair oiling | Apply to scalp or lengths before shampooing |
| Finishing oil | A drop or two on dry ends for softness |
| Body oil | Massage onto damp skin after a shower |
| Massage | Used for slip and comfort during massage |
We are not going to assume which of these Oil 1 is designed for, or which botanical or carrier oils it contains.
What oils generally do
Oils are emollients: they soften and smooth. On skin, they help reduce water loss and leave a supple feel. On hair, certain oils have been studied for their ability to reduce damage during washing. A well-known study found that coconut oil applied before washing reduced protein loss in hair (Rele and Mohile, 2003), while other oils behave differently because of their structure. These findings describe specific oils, not Oil 1, whose composition has not been published yet.
What oils cannot do
Despite generations of stories, there is no reliable evidence that topical oils make hair grow, and we will never claim that Oil 1 does. If you are experiencing hair loss or thinning, a dermatologist can help identify the cause.
Oil 1 or Oil 2?
Oil 2 is a separate product, not a stronger version. Once both labels are confirmed, we will explain how they differ in purpose and feel.
Who might consider it?
People who enjoy an oiling ritual, whose hair or skin tends to feel dry, or who like a richer finish are the natural audience. If your skin is acne-prone, or your scalp is oily or flaky, wait for the ingredient list, because some oils feel heavy or do not suit everyone.
Texture and scent
We have not confirmed the scent, texture or how quickly it absorbs. These will be described from the finished product.
How to use Oil 1
Directions for this product will appear here once its label is confirmed.
General tip for pre-wash oiling: a moderate amount, massaged gently, is easier to wash out than a heavily saturated scalp.
Where it fits
For hair, oiling usually comes before shampoo, or as a final drop on dry ends. For body, oils are often applied to damp skin after a shower. Our guide on hair serum versus hair oil explains the role of each.
Safety and suitability
Product-specific warnings will be published from the final label.
Patch test before first use, keep it away from the eyes, and stop using it if irritation develops. Oils can make bathroom floors slippery, so take care.
